Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum

Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum ((ラトビア語:Latvijas Etnogrāfiskais Brīvdabas Muzejs)) is a museum in Riga, Latvia. It is an open-air museum, situated in a forest park area beside a Jugla lake just outside the capital, with farmers village houses, moved from different districts of the country.
== History ==
In 1924 latvian Council of Monuments signed the order of establishing Open air-museum in Riga. Idea of a new museum was inspired by open-air museums in Scandinavia, particularly Skansen in Stockholm. The plan was to relocate to museum a homesteads from the all four regions of Latvia, Courland, Zemgale, Vidzeme and Latgale, supplied by buildings representing different crafts.
New museum got land from the State land fund in a sandy dunes near Jugla lake just outside the city. In 1928 first building- trashing barn from Vestiena parish, was relocated and rebuilt in the museum.
In 1932 the museum was opened to the public with 6 buildings (Vidzeme homestead). In 1939 there were already 40 buildings erected in the museum. Every region had its homestead and several other buildings with architectural or cultural value. In 1930s museum became a very popular place and society actively participated in the development of the museum. Several buildings were relocated and rebuilt thanks to private donations.
In the Second World war museum saw little damage. However most of its pre-war personnel were repressed or went into exile also many documents were lost. After the war new soviet power at the first didn't understand the nature of the museum and it was even declared as ideologically incorrect. Only in the late 1960s the museum saw its renaissance when new generation of museum specialists started work in the museum and also contacts with other countries became better. Territory of the museum was expanded and many objects with high value was erected into museum.
When Latvia regained independence in 1991 museum started actively collect and document heritage from 1920s and 1930s, period when Latvian Agrarian reforms reshaped Latvian countryside. As a result complex of a new farmers homestead from 1930s was opened in 1997. Museum also organizes many cultural events like folk concerts, tradition and craft festivals and promotes traditional latvian culture and lifestyle. Annual traditional craft fair is organized by the museum since 1971. Due to its long history it has become museums most known activity and it is visited by tens of thousand people every year.

Today museum area is 87 hectares big and 118 buildings are on display, as well as more than 3000 items. Most of historical ethnic groups in Latvia are represented in the museum. The collections count approximately 150,000 items.
